Brazil promotes itself as a harmonious blend of races, but the reality as the country celebrates Black Awareness Day is that the darker your skin, the less chance you have of getting ahead
According to the state statistics office, only about 5% of management jobs are held by non-whites, who account for 54% of the population, according to the latest census. Among the richest 10% of Brazilians, 70% are white. Among the poorest 10%, 74% are black. Blacks are also hard to find in prominent media jobs or in fashion.

Israel’s cabinet has voted to close a migrant detention center, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced an agreement to deport 40,000 Africans who had entered the country illegally
“The infiltrators will have the option to be imprisoned or leave the country,” the public security ministry said in a statement. Israeli official figures from June 30, 2017 show a total of 38,043 African migrants in the country. Speaking ahead of the vote, Netanyahu noted that after building a fence on the Egyptian border and deporting some 20,000 African migrants through various deals, Israel has reached the third stage of its efforts — “accelerated removal”. “This removal is taking place thanks to an international agreement I reached that enables us to remove the 40,000 infiltrators remaining, remove them without their consent,” he told ministers. Jews love diversity everywhere except Israel.

A rabbi at one of the largest synagogues in Britain has come forward with details of sexual harassment that she and female rabbinic colleagues have received from their own congregants, urging the community to pay closer attention to the issue
Rabbi Hannah Kingston of North Western Reform Synagogue in London said in her sermon that amid the current public conversations about sexual harassment and assault, “One very close colleague of mine relived the moment that she found out that she was known by her congregants as ‘the rabbi with the nice legs.’ She said that after that she took to wearing trousers.” Kingston has had similar experiences on a “weekly basis,” she said: “I can lead an entire service and have someone come up to me at the end and say: ‘oh you look pretty today.’ That wouldn’t happen to a male colleague and it completely degrades what I’ve spent two hours talking about. It happens weekly.” Kingston said that she was originally “scared” about speaking out. “When we come forward and speak about sexual harassment we are letting our humanity show in a way that we might normally try to protect,” she explained. But ultimately, she concluded, “To ignore this issue as a female rabbi would have been a disservice to my community.” Kingston’s sermon was tied to the Torah portion recounting the death of Sarah. “What we see through the narrative of Sarah is a woman who is silenced,” she said. “Her own story is suppressed, she is not listened to….Not once do we consider how Sarah might feel about [being taken into Pharaoh’s palace] or what it could do to a woman to be passed so easily on to another man.”
A black couple has pleaded guilty to beating a restaurant owner and her teenage daughter after they complained of being sold cold fried chicken
Nathaniel Smith, 45, and Latasha Smith, 28, have entered guilty pleas to charges of aggravated assault and cruelty to children. Surveillance captured Latasha beating Jeanette Norris, the owner of the Qwik Chick, because the couple claimed that their food was cold and they didn't have enough fries. When Norris's 15-year-old daughter got out of a vehicle to help her mother, Nathaniel is seen punching her in the face, sending her flying backwards. Norris suffered a broken nose and her daughter was treated for a concussion.

In 2016, the overall rate of reported chlamydia cases among blacks in the United States was 1,125.9 cases per 100,000 population
The rate of reported chlamydia cases among black women was 5.1 times the rate among white women (1,387.2 and 271.1 cases per 100,000 females, respectively). The rate of reported chlamydia cases among black men was 6.6 times the rate among white men (839.0 and 126.4 cases per 100,000 males, respectively). Rates of reported cases of chlamydia were highest for blacks aged 15–19 and 20–24 years in 2016. The rate of reported chlamydia cases among black women aged 15–19 years (6,485.2 cases per 100,000 females) was 4.5 times the rate among white women in the same age group (1,433.3 cases per 100,000 females). The rate of reported chlamydia cases among black women aged 20–24 years was 3.7 times the rate among white women in the same age group (6,747.6 and 1,836.2 cases per 100,000 females, respectively). Similar racial disparities in reported chlamydia rates exist among men. Among men aged 15–19 years, the rate of reported chlamydia cases among blacks was 8.8 times the rate among whites (2,337.7 and 266.9 cases per 100,000 males, respectively). The rate of reported chlamydia cases among black men aged 20–24 years was 4.9 times the rate among white men of the same age group (3,316.9 and 682.5 cases per 100,000 males, respectively).

Jewish sex predator update: An Emmy-winning writer for AMC's Mad Men once thought her award would solidify a successful career path, but she was let go from the show a year later — and she's now accusing show creator Matthew Weiner of sexual harassment
Kater Gordon, who started as Weiner's personal assistant in 2007 before becoming a writers' assistant, said that she was working late one night with Weiner co-writing the show's season finale, an episode that won them both an Emmy in 2009. She said during their session, Weiner remarked that she owed it to him to let him see her naked, a comment she just let fade before continuing to work on the script with him. But the months that followed left her feeling "threatened and devalued," though she didn't report the incident because she said that she wanted the writing credit for that episode to help get her another job. "I saw no value to speaking out," she said. "So I did what I thought women were supposed to do." She said that she "lost respect" for Weiner, and a longtime writer on the show said "I could see her confidence was shaken" after the incident. Just weeks after her Emmy win, Weiner let Gordon go, rattling off a list of ways she'd "fallen short" on the job, she said. In a statement from his rep, Weiner said that he spent "eight to 10 hours a day" holed up working with Gordon, but he notes he doesn't remember making that remark and insists he had "a predominantly female driven writers room [and] has long believed in and implemented an egalitarian working environment." Gordon fell out of Hollywood after that and went on instead to found Modern Alliance, a nonprofit for sexual harassment victims. She said that she was "inspired" to speak out after hearing Harvey Weinstein stories.

One of the world's leading Islamic scholars is on a leave of absence from the University of Oxford amid allegations that he raped two women
Tariq Ramadan, the grandson of Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna, has denied the allegations made by the two women in France and filed a slander complaint. One woman, author Henda Ayari, says Ramadan "literally pounced on me like a wild animal" when he attacked her in a Paris hotel room in 2012. Ayari says that the Harvey Weinstein accusations inspired her to come forward. The second accuser, a disabled woman who says that Ramadan beat her and raped her repeatedly in 2009, has chosen to remain anonymous. "By mutual agreement, and with immediate effect, Tariq Ramadan, Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies, has taken a leave of absence," the British university said in a statement, adding that the accusations had caused "heightened and understandable distress." Ramadan, 55, said that he "saluted" the statement, which he said "defended the principle of the presumption of innocence without minimizing the seriousness of the allegations against me." The four women in Switzerland have told local media that Ramadan sexually harassed them when they were teenage students in the '80s and '90s.

There is a large over-representation of immigrants, particularly from the Middle East and North Africa, among the suspects of sex crimes in Sweden
Over-representation of immigrants has been even higher when it comes to group rapes, especially with three or more assailants. According to an official study from 1996, immigrant males were 4.5 times as likely as Swedes to commit rape. Immigrants from Algeria, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia were particularly over-represented, being more than 20 times as likely to commit the same crime. In total, 53% of rape suspects were either first or second generation immigrants. A similar study, conducted in 2005, showed an even higher over-representation of immigrants among sex crime suspects, by then up to 5.1 times as likely as Swedes to commit rape. In the 2005 study, the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention explained the growing over-representation with reference to demographics and immigration: “[T]he number of people in Sweden belonging to the group of refugees, which have in earlier studies been shown to have an especially high propensity to commit crime, has increased.” It is a plausible hypothesis that the same mechanism is at work now. During the recent migration crisis, Sweden took in more refugees per capita than any other country in Europe. However, the exact link between sex crimes and immigration is not known, since the Swedish government will not update its statistics, and the data, which are still being collected, have not been made available to the public. In a recent interview, the Minister of Justice, Morgan Johansson, said that the facts are available in the 2005 study, and that no update is necessary. But since 2005, Sweden has absorbed a large influx of refugees from the over-represented regions in North Africa and the Middle East. If over-representation has not changed dramatically since this last survey, it is reasonable to infer that immigration has contributed to the increase in reported sex crime.
Despite filing a false report, police say that Dauntarius Williams, 21, won't face any charges. The incident fueled racial tensions at Kansas State University and in the community, and the FBI had opened a civil rights investigation. As usual, another "hate crime" turns out to be a hoax and the perpetrator gets away with it.
In what turned out to be a futile attempt to avoid his downfall, Harvey Weinstein hired an army of spies to target women accusing him of sexual assault or harassment and the journalists trying to report on their claims. Around a year ago, Weinstein employed private security agencies — including Black Cube, which is run by former agents of Israel's Mossad spy agency — to try to suppress the allegations. Agents met with actresses and journalists under false pretenses, including one who met with Rose McGowan several times, claiming to be a women's rights advocate. Weinstein supervised efforts to target dozens of individuals, and compile psychological profiles that sometimes focused on their personal or sexual histories. Weinstein also spoke to current and former employees to try and identify people who might speak out against him, and enlisted the help of journalists and allies including Dylan Howard at National Enquirer publisher American Media Inc. to try to discredit accusers. Some of the women targeted say the use of private security agencies made it even tougher to speak out against the powerful producer. "Ex-Mossad operatives? The biggest international security firms in the world on your case?? And these women STILL spoke up!!," tweeted Anthony Bourdain, partner of Weinstein accuser Asia Argento, adding that Howard is "beneath whale s---."
Katie Hopkins has revealed that she is a DUP supporter - but believes it is only a matter of time before Ireland is reunited
In a typically frank interview she revealed she was "increasingly torn" about Northern Ireland's future in the UK. Hopkins said she had an affinity for the province as it would have been the first place she would have been posted to had she not been kicked out of Sandhurst Military Academy for not disclosing that she was an epileptic. The outspoken columnist was speaking ahead of the release of her autobiography, Rude. Dubbed the most hated woman in Britain, Hopkins is no stranger to controversy. Her views on everything from working mothers to Muslims have led to death threats, a libel case and her firing. She said: "The DUP increasingly have a role here in British life. I find the DUP and our transfer of cash to them was a curious thing. But a lot of what they stand for seems to be fairly sensible politics in my book. I am a supporter." Yet Hopkins revealed that she has serious doubts about Northern Ireland's future as part of the UK. She added: "I don't think that Northern Ireland will remain part of the UK. I can't imagine a time where we continue the divisions of countries according to lives that don't seem to make sense anymore. As much as I am a huge patriot and a defender of the United Kingdom, you watch Catalan (sic) and Spain, you see how passionate the Catalans are, and you hear Scotland, and you can't help, given the way I feel about Brexit, think that you are either a supporter of independence or you are a hypocrite. I am increasingly torn."

The research, conducted by scientists at Glasgow University, concluded that heterosexual men and lesbians looked for women with the same eye color as their mothers. Similarly, the scientists found that heterosexual women and gay men were attracted to men whose eyes were the same color as their father. The study correlates to a theory known as positive sexual imprinting, whereby birds and mammals choose their mates based on attributes exhibited by their parents.

Scientists have discovered a gene in African Americans that increases their risk of depression and alcoholism
Researchers have found that SEMA3A, a neurological gene previously associated with diseases such as Alzheimer's, was disrupted in African Americans with dependency problems, but not in European Americans. Researchers do not yet know what in the genetic code makes it so that this disruption only impacts African Americans. SEMA3A is a gene variant involved in brain development and neuron connectivity.

Leon Wieseltier, the influential Jewish scholar and magazine editor, has been fired from his latest venture following revelations of sexual harassment during his long tenure at the New Republic
“For my offenses against some of my colleagues in the past I offer a shaken apology and ask for their forgiveness,” Wieseltier said in a statement. “The women with whom I worked are smart and good people. I am ashamed to know that I made any of them feel demeaned and disrespected. I assure them that I will not waste this reckoning.” The first issue of Idea, the magazine he was to launch, appeared to be near completion, but its backer, Laurene Powell Jobs, decided to shelve the issue after the revelations and break up the publication. Jobs is the widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs. Tales of Wieseltier’s sexual harassment were circulating among female journalists who have been compiling information about harassers in the profession since the explosion of such stories following the revelations of decades of sexual assault by Jewish movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. Chris Hughes, who owned the New Republic for a short period, said in a statement that that he had investigated a harassment complaint from a woman who worked for the management company at the building where the magazine was housed. Wieseltier, who feuded with Hughes, led a walkout in 2014 while Hughes was the owner. Several women described unwanted kisses on the mouth from Wieseltier and sexualized comments about their clothing, among other offenses. Wieseltier, a member of the editorial board of the Jewish Review of Books, is a regular on the Jewish lecture circuit, speaking about Israel and Jewish belief systems. He won the 1998 Jewish Book Council Award for nonfiction for “Kaddish,” a study and memoir about the Jewish memorial prayer.

African Americans tend to have shorter lives than whites - largely due to higher rates of heart diseases and strokes, according to a statement from the American Heart Association
The average white American lives to 79 years old, compared to the average black American who is expected to reach 75.5 years at most. Experts warn that there is no clearer indication of health disparity than in cardiovascular health; heart diseases killed more than two million black Americans between 1999 and 2010. While African Americans are more likely to experience many cardiovascular diseases, in particular strokes and heart failure, they are also more likely to die from cardiovascular diseases. African Americans develop nearly all cardiovascular diseases - heart attack, stroke, and heart failure - at a relatively young age. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors - high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and atherosclerosis - are more common and start at earlier ages among African Americans. Many of the differences arise from unhealthy behaviors, lower implementation of guidelines shown to improve cardiovascular health, ingrained cultural preferences and attitudes, and lack of persistence in following lifestyle changes that need to be lifelong. African Americans also have higher rates of certain health conditions that predispose to cardiovascular disease - such as chronic kidney disease, sickle cell disease/sickle cell trait, and HIV, for example.

More than 30 women have come forward concerning sexual harassment that they received from Jewish Oscar-nominated writer-director James Toback
Of the 38 women, 31 agreed to be named and on-the-record about Toback’s behavior, dating back to the 1980s and as recently as 2008. Toback would approach young aspiring actresses and promise to make them “stars” if they held private meetings. At these meetings, the women said, Toback would grill them about their sexual histories before either dry-humping on them or masturbating in front of them. “It’s a common thread among many women I know … after someone mentions they were sexually abused by a creepy writer-director, the response is, ‘Oh, no. You got Toback-ed,’” actress and drama teacher Karen Sklaire said. She said that she had her own meeting with Toback in 1997, which ended with him grinding against her leg. Toback, who is Jewish, was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for “Bugsy,” a film about the Jewish mobster Bugsy Siegel.
A Scottish tourist says that he was just trying not to spill his drink while at a Dubai bar, and he'll spend time in jail for it
Jamie Harron, 27, was handed a 3-month sentence for touching a man's hip, something Harron says happened while he was walking with a drink in the crowded Rock Bottom Cafe on July 15, 2017; he says he put out his hand "to avoid impact" with a patron, but the incident led to a public indecency charge. The group Detained in Dubai has been championing Harron's cause and complaining about what it sees as deficiencies in his defense, including "key witnesses" who were not asked to testify. It says an appeal is planned, "though this will prolong his increasingly difficult circumstances in Dubai, and compound the enormous financial losses he has suffered as a consequence of the ongoing case." The group's CEO adds that his family hasn't been able to be by his side, as "they faced a very real risk of imprisonment themselves under the UAE's cybercrime laws which forbid criticism of the government." Harron, an electrician, stopped off in Dubai for a couple days en route to a job in Afghanistan.

The World Health Organization has chosen a new "goodwill ambassador" whose human rights abuses have left him with very little goodwill internationally: Robert Mugabe
The 93-year-old president of Zimbabwe was chosen by new WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to help fight non-communicable diseases like strokes and asthma across Africa. The appointment has been condemned by multiple governments and human rights groups since health care in Zimbabwe has collapsed under Mugabe's regime. In addition, Mugabe has been regularly leaving Zimbabwe to seek medical treatment elsewhere. "The decision to appoint Robert Mugabe as a WHO goodwill ambassador is deeply disappointing and wrong," says Dr. Jeremy Farrar of the Wellcome Trust, a British charitable foundation. "Robert Mugabe fails in every way to represent the values WHO should stand for." A group of around two dozen other health organizations said that they were shocked and deeply concerned by the appointment. A spokesman for Zimbabwean opposition party MDC described the appointment as laughable. "Mugabe trashed our health delivery system," he said.

Black man who wielded flamethrower during white nationalist rally in Charlottesville has been arrested
Coorey Long, the black man who wielded an improvised flamethrower against white nationalists at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia — an incident captured in a photo that went viral — has become the second black to be arrested recently in relation to the rally. Charlottesville police investigators arrested Long, 23, of Culpeper, Virginia on charges of assault and battery and disorderly conduct. Lt. Stephen Upman, a Charlottesville police spokesman, said that the disorderly conduct charge is related to the makeshift flamethrower and the assault and battery charge is related to a separate skirmish during the rally. Long, who was released on an unsecured bond after appearing before a magistrate, declined to comment after his arrest and referred all questions to his attorney, Malik Zulu Shabazz, national president of Black Lawyers for Justice and former national chairman of the New Black Panther Party. Shabazz, whom the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as a racist black nationalist, did not comment other than to say that he would be at Long’s court hearing.

By contrast, homicide was the 12th highest contributor to potential years of life lost for white Americans. Potential years of lost life is the number of years a person would have lived had they not died of a particular cause. Heart disease is the leading cause of potential years of life lost among white Americans. The average age of a black American who died from a congenital abnormality was 15 years old, compared to 26 years old for a white American. And black Americans who commit suicide die, on average, 10 years earlier than white Americans who commit suicide (38 years old versus 48). The more than 2.7 million deaths in the United States in 2015 tallied up to nearly 21.4 million potential years of life lost. Black Americans accounted for 20% of these years despite representing only 13% of the U.S. population.
Nearly half of black Americans who borrowed from the federal government to attend college defaulted on their student loans — more than double the rate among white student debtors, according to new data from the U.S. Department of Education
Some 48.6% of black student debtors defaulted on a federal loan, compared with 10.8% of Asians, 20.4% of whites, and 34.7% of Hispanics. Across all races, about 27% of all borrowers defaulted. Nearly two-thirds of black students who took out loans to attend for-profit colleges, or 65.7%, ended up in default, data show. But the racial disparity was particularly dramatic for those who attended nonprofit four-year colleges: They were four times as likely as their white peers to default on their loans. The typical white household led by someone without a bachelor's degree is wealthier than the typical black household led by someone with at least a bachelor's degree, according to figures from the Federal Reserve’s triennial Survey of Consumer Finances.

Six Egyptian men have been arrested for promoting sexual deviancy and debauchery on social media will be subjected to anal examinations ahead of their trial, Amnesty International has said
Their arrest is part of a wider crackdown against homosexuality that started when a group of people were seen raising a rainbow flag at a concert, a rare public show of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in the Muslim country. At least 11 people have since been arrested, Amnesty said, and one man has been sentenced to six years in jail after local media launched a highly critical campaign against those who raised the rainbow flag at a Mashrou’ Leila concert, a popular Lebanese alternative rock band whose lead singer is openly gay. Amnesty said the Forensic Medical Authority was due to subject the six men to anal examinations to determine whether they have had homosexual sex. Judicial sources said any defendant accused of debauchery or sexual deviancy, a euphemism for homosexuality in Egypt, is subjected to a medical examination based on an order from the Public Prosecutor. Amnesty said such examinations violate the prohibition of torture and other ill-treatment under international law. “The fact that Egypt’s Public Prosecutor is prioritizing hunting down people based on their perceived sexual orientation is utterly deplorable. These men should be released immediately and unconditionally – not put on trial,” said Najia Bounaim, North Africa Campaigns Director at Amnesty International. “Forced anal examinations are abhorrent and amount to torture. The Egyptian authorities have an appalling track record of using invasive physical tests which amount to torture against detainees in their custody. All plans to carry out such tests on these men must be stopped immediately.” Egypt’s Islamic religious establishment is voicing its support for the government’s moves against homosexuals. “Al Azhar will stand against calls for sexual perversion the same way it has stood against extremist groups,” a preacher at the 1,000-year-old seat of Sunni Muslim learning said in his Friday prayers sermon. Although homosexuality is not specifically outlawed in Egypt, discrimination is rife. Gay men are frequently arrested and typically charged with debauchery, immorality or blasphemy. The largest crackdown on homosexuals took place in 2001, when police raided a floating disco called the Queen Boat. Fifty-two men were tried in the case.

California: Despite decades of effort and billions of dollars in funding, test scores for white, Asian American and wealthier students are much higher than those of their black, Latino and low-income peers
On computerized tests administered in the spring, for example, just 19% of African American students were proficient in math, compared with 73% of Asian American students. In San Francisco, school leaders noted that the city was the only urban district in the state where more than half of students were proficient in both math and English. The middle schools showed significant gains this year in both subjects, with students of color mirroring the increases. The achievement gap actually widened, though, including a 58-point difference between white and black San Francisco students in English — a 77% proficiency rate compared with 19%.

In 2015, a police officer was 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male was to be killed by a police officer
Black males have made up 42% of all cop-killers over the last decade, though they are only 6% of the population. That 18.5 ratio undoubtedly worsened in 2016, in light of the 53% increase in gun murders of officers — committed vastly and disproportionately by black males. Nearly 900 additional blacks were killed in 2016 compared with 2015, bringing the black homicide-victim total to 7,881. Among all homicide suspects whose race was known, white killers of blacks numbered only 243.

An international team of researchers has found that a genetic variant carried almost exclusively by African Americans significantly reduces the accuracy of the standard test for type 2 diabetes, the glycated haemoglobin or HbA1c test
The test measures the amount of glucose that is carried by the red blood cells over the previous two to three months. At least one copy of the variant in the G6PD gene is carried by around 11% of African Americans. This means that around 650,000 African Americans in the United States could have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes if tested with the HbA1c test alone. The results suggest screening for G6PD alongside the diagnostic test, or using other diagnostic tests in populations with African ancestry in order to improve diagnoses of type 2 diabetes.
The presence of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) varied significantly in the tumors of African-American and European-American women with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC)
TNBC is a highly aggressive breast cancer subtype that afflicts African-American women at a higher rate than white women, and often involves a worse prognosis. Previous research has shown that African-American women tend to develop more aggressive subtypes of TNBC than European-American women, exacerbating the disparity in survival.

One woman was killed and seven other people were hurt after a suspect identified as a Sudanese immigrant opened fire at a Tennessee church
The suspect, 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson, immigrated from Sudan two decades ago, police said. He's suspected of bringing at least two pistols and a mask to the predominantly white Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, southeast of Nashville. Metropolitan Nashville Police Department tweeted that Samson will be charged with murder and attempted murder. Law enforcement confirmed that Samson is a legal U.S. resident who immigrated from Sudan in 1996.

All blue-eyed people have one ancestor in common, born around 6,000-10,000 years ago. Blue eyes are caused by a gene mutation. For years, researchers had searched for it on the OCA2 gene. The OCA2 gene determines how much brown pigment is in our eyes. But what they were looking for wasn't there at all. The mutation was found on an entirely different gene called HERC2. HERC2 turns off OCA2, meaning it turns off the brown and reveals the blue. Every blue-eyed person has this exact same mutation. Only people of European descent have blue eyes. It would also suggest that all blue-eyed people share a single European ancestor.
An 18-year-old black man has been charged with raping and murdering a homeless white mother before sexually assaulting her corpse
James Arthur House was arrested in Baltimore when he confessed to slaying and raping 35-year-old Jessica Gibson. The mother-of-four's body was found dumped behind large pallets on a downtown Baltimore access road. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled. House has been charged with murder, rape, perverted practice, reckless endangerment and sex offenses. Some of the sex acts House is charged with were carried out on Gibson's dead body.
Alton Nolen told police that he felt oppressed as a Muslim at the food plant by his co-workers, who he said teamed up against him. He spoke to them after being arrested for the attack. When the police asked him if he regretted his actions, he responded, “I don’t feel regret, because you know what I’ve done. That’s probably going to make Vaughan Foods a better place to work for a Muslim.” In September 2014, Nolen was suspended from his job at Vaughan Foods because a co-worker said that they had gotten into an argument after he said he didn’t like white people. Nolen returned with a knife, stabbed and beheaded 54-year-old Colleen Hufford, and attacked Traci Johnson, the woman who had issued the complaint about him. Authorities have presented as evidence in the trial that Nolen had a Koran and other “written scripture” in his apartment at the time of the attack. His Facebook page also had many signs of Islamic radicalization, including posts claiming, “Sharia Law is coming!!” and exhibiting pictures of beheadings and the Taliban. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the ongoing trial.
Just 16 unarmed black men out of a population of more than 20 million were killed by the police in 2016 – down from 36 the year before
Only 0.08% of black men are injured by the police each year, approximately the same rate as for white men. A black man is about 44 times as likely to suffer a traffic-related injury.

Startling genetic diversity indicates that ancient Papuans didn't even mix with each other: The ancestors of the Papuan New Guinean peoples arrived 50,000+ years ago, scattered into highland and lowland areas, and evidently kept to themselves since then, going by genetic and linguistic evidence
The latest twist in the history of humankind is that after ancestral Homo sapiens settled Papua New Guinea, which seems to have been around 50,000 to 70,000 years ago, they not only didn't budge. They not only didn't mix with the peoples around them, if any. They didn't even mix with each other, going by the startling degree of genetic and linguistic diversity found between groups of Papuans. In fact, the original occupants of both Papua New Guinea and, later, Australia, seem to have been a very sedentary bunch. The aborigines' forefathers reached Australia at least 50,000 years ago, scattered along the coastline for about 1,500 to 2,000 years and then, having struck roots wherever they struck roots, they didn't budge for the next 50,000 years. An unrelated study in 2016 postulated that aboriginal Australians and Papuans diverged from Eurasians anywhere from 70,000 to 50,000 years ago. This postulation is bolstered by the new study, which indicates that the Papuans would remain genetically independent from Europe and Asia for most of the last 50,000 years.

Two alleged Isis supporters who were born on Germany are to be deported from the country in the first such expulsion in history
The men, who hold Algerian and Nigerian citizenship, were arrested on suspicion of planning an imminent terror attack after a gun and Isis flags were found at their homes during police raids in Göttingen. They have not been prosecuted and the allegations have not been tested in a criminal court, but federal judges upheld their planned deportation, bolstering government plans to expel more foreign nationals believed to be terror threats. Boris Pistorius, the interior minister for Lower Saxony, said that the move sent a “nationwide signal to all fanatics, that we will give not even a centimeter for their inhuman plans. They will be met with the full severity of means at our disposal – whether they have grown up here [in Germany] or not”. Authorities in the state adopted a new law allowing them to expel terror suspects held to be dangerous in February 2017, amid nationwide security crackdowns following the Berlin attack. The two unnamed suspects launched an appeal to stay their expulsion from Germany but it was rejected by the Federal Administrative Court.

There is a story in the Bible that tells of God’s call for the annihilation of the Canaanites, a people who lived in the area that is now Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Israel and the Palestinian territories thousands of years ago. “You shall not leave alive anything that breathes,” God said in the passage. “But you shall utterly destroy them.” But a genetic analysis has found that the ancient population survived that divine call for their extinction, and their descendants live in modern Lebanon. “We can see the present-day Lebanese can trace most of their ancestry to the Canaanites or a genetically equivalent population,” said Chris Tyler-Smith, a geneticist with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute who is an author of the paper. “They derive just over 90% of their ancestry from the Canaanites.” Tyler-Smith and an international team of geneticists and archaeologists recovered ancient DNA from bones belonging to five Canaanites retrieved from an excavation site in Sidon, Lebanon, that were 3,650 to 3,750 years old. The team then compared the ancient DNA with the genomes of 99 living people from Lebanon that the group had sequenced. It found that the modern Lebanese people shared about 93% of their ancestry with the Bronze Age Sidon samples. “The conclusion is clear,” said Iosif Lazaridis, a geneticist at Harvard who was not involved in the study. “Based on this study it turns out that people who lived in Lebanon almost 4,000 years ago were quite similar to people who lived there today, to the modern Lebanese.” Marc Haber, a postdoctoral fellow at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in England and lead author on the study, said that compared with other Bronze Age civilizations, not much is known about the Canaanites. “We know about ancient Egyptians and ancient Greeks, but we know very little about the ancient Canaanites because their records didn’t survive,” he said. Their writings may have been kept on papyrus, which did not stand the test of time as clay did. What is known about the Canaanites is that they lived and traded along the eastern coast of the present-day Mediterranean, a region that was known as the Levant. “What we see is that since the Bronze Age, this ancestry, or the genetics of the people there, didn’t change much,” Haber said. “It changed a little, but it didn’t change much and that is what surprised me.” He said researchers thought that migrations, conquests and the intermixing of Eurasian people — like the Assyrians, Persians or Macedonians — with the Canaanites 3,800 to 2,200 years ago might have contributed to the slight genetic changes seen in modern Lebanese populations. Still, the Lebanese retain most of their ancestral DNA from the Canaanites.
African-Americans typically have worse outcomes from smoking-related cancers than whites. Scientists at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center have found that African-Americans have an increased mutation rate in several genes, including the best known in tobacco-related tumors, TP53. "We know TP53 mutation happens in 55% of all cancer patients," said the study's lead author, Wei Zhang, Ph.D., Hanes and Willis Family Professor in Cancer at Wake Forest School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist. "In our study, we found that the African-American population had close to a 70% mutation rate. This data suggests that increases in TP53 mutation in African-Americans may be responsible for the observed resistance to chemotherapy and a poorer prognosis overall." The scientists found a significantly increased mutation rate in the TP53 gene in the African-American groups studied. The researchers also found that a number of genes - including those that repair DNA damage and remodel chromatin - mutated at higher frequencies in the African-American cancer patients.

Barbaric Muslims: Some 20 people from Multan, Pakistan, have been arrested for ordering the rape of a teenage girl, in revenge for a rape her brother allegedly committed
Police said that the families of the two girls are related. Members of both had joined forces to decide what should be done. "A jirga [village council] had ordered the rape of a 16-year-old girl as punishment, as her brother had raped a 12-year-old," police official Allah Baksh said. He said that the village council was approached recently by a man who said that his 12-year-old sister had been raped by their cousin. The council then ordered the complainant to rape the sister of the accused in return - which police say he did. The girl was forced to appear before the group and raped in front of them and her parents. The mothers of the two girls later filed complaints at the local police station. Medical examinations have confirmed rape in both cases. Another officer, Ahsan Younas, said that the first girl to be raped was aged between 12 and 14. The victim of the revenge rape is said to be 16 or 17. He said that police had registered a complaint against 25 people, and that the suspect accused of raping the 12-year-old was still at large.

Jewish Privilege: New legislation in Congress would criminalize support for the international boycott against Israel
A group of 43 senators — 29 Republicans and 14 Democrats — wants to implement a law that would make it a felony for Americans to support the international boycott against Israel, which was launched in protest of that country’s decades-old occupation of Palestine. The two primary sponsors of the bill are Democrat Ben Cardin of Maryland and Republican Rob Portman of Ohio. Perhaps the most shocking aspect is the punishment: Anyone guilty of violating the prohibitions will face a minimum civil penalty of $250,000 and a maximum criminal penalty of $1 million and 20 years in prison. The proposed measure, called the Israel Anti-Boycott Act (S. 720), was introduced by Cardin on March 23, 2017. The bill was drafted with the assistance of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Indeed, AIPAC, in its 2017 lobbying agenda, identified passage of this bill as one of its top lobbying priorities for the year. The bill’s co-sponsors include the senior Democrat in Washington, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, his New York colleague Kirsten Gillibrand, and several of the Senate’s more liberal members, such as Ron Wyden of Oregon, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, and Maria Cantwell of Washington.

Studies show that 16%–37% of white Americans admit moderate to strong disapproval of close relatives engaging in interracial romances with blacks
Historically, white Americans have been least accepting of interracial romances between whites and blacks, and this tendency continues to emerge in contemporary public opinion polls. Given societal norms prohibiting the expression of racial prejudice, there is good reason to believe that rates of disapproval are underestimated. Evidence suggests that whites' implicit racial attitudes tend to be considerably more biased than their explicit racial attitudes. Whites tend to be less accepting of interracial romance for themselves than for others. Qualitative analysis of attitudes toward interracial romance shows that although most whites report explicit approval of interracial romance, they go on to explain why they would avoid it for themselves. Recent findings from a large demographically representative survey of Americans indicated that 38% of whites were unwilling to engage in any type of romantic relationship with a black person. Moreover, data from actual online dating profiles in the United States showed that over 50% of white profile owners were unwilling to date blacks.

A black woman who'd been married for just four months before her husband died has been found guilty of his murder, and she could get life in prison without parole for her crime
Uloma Curry-Walker, 45, was convicted of aggravated murder, conspiracy, and other charges surrounding the 2013 death of firefighter William Walker, with prosecutors painting her during the trial as having fallen into financial straits and approaching her 17-year-old daughter and daughter's boyfriend with a deadly plan: Find someone to take out her husband, William Walker, so she could collect his life insurance money, which was contained in a $100,000 policy. Curry-Walker handed over a $1,000 down payment to her daughter's boyfriend, Chad Padgett, to find a hitman, which precipitated a chain of events leading to her husband's slaying. But what William Walker's death didn't bring to his widow was the life insurance money, as he had never named his wife as the beneficiary after they married. Who did get the money: his ex-wife, who was still named as the beneficiary on the plan. Padgett, Curry-Walker's daughter, and two men who tried to kill William Walker (one of them was the successful hitman) took plea deals in exchange for testimony against Curry-Walker, who had said in her initial confession that her husband had abused her. Her daughter, the only one involved who won't go to jail (she'll spend a month in a juvenile detention center), said during the trial that her mother had informed her: "No one would believe I would hire a bunch of kids to kill someone when I know people that could."

The nation's homeownership rate appears to be stabilizing as people rebound from the 2007 recession that left millions unemployed and home values underwater, but a new report finds that African-Americans aren't sharing in the recovery. The report by Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies said that the disparity between whites and blacks is at its highest in 70-plus years of data. By 2016, the African-American homeowner rate had fallen to 42.2% and lagged 29.7 percentage points behind whites, nearly a percentage point higher than in 2015. In 2004, the pinnacle of US homeownership, three-quarters of whites and nearly half of blacks owned homes, according to the Harvard study. An analysis of Census Bureau statistics shows that some pockets of the Midwest and California had the lowest homeownership rates for African-Americans, while some areas of the South had the highest.
The late German historian Rolf Peter Sieferle has upset his more politically correct countrymen with his posthumous collection of observations on Germany’s political culture. He has even taken on the sacred cows of the Holocaust and mass immigration. Sieferle is critical of Germany’s postwar culture of Holocaust memory, which he argues has taken on the traits of a religion. The country’s sins are held to be unique and absolute, beyond either redemption or comparison. “The First Commandment,” he writes, “is ‘Thou shalt have no Holocausts before me.’ ” Hitler, in retrospect, turns out to have done a paradoxical thing: He bound Germans and Jews together in a narrative for all time. In an otherwise relativistic and disenchanted world, Sieferle writes, Germans appear in this narrative as the absolute enemies of our common humanity, as a scapegoat people. The role is hereditary. There are Germans whose grandparents were not born when the war ended, yet they, too, must take on the role. On the issue of mass immigration he believed that Germany’s self-demonization had left it unable to say anything but yes to a million or so migrants seeking entry to Europe in 2015 and that such a welcome was unsustainable.

Muslim groups in Malaysia and Indonesia have called for a boycott of Starbucks because of the coffee chain's support for LGBT rights
Malaysian group Perkasa, which supports a hard-line form of Islam and nationalism, has called on its more than 500,000 members to stay away from Starbucks coffee shops. Recently, leaders of Indonesia's second largest mainstream Muslim group, Muhammadiyah, with an estimated 29 million members, denounced the chain. The groups were apparently reacting to comments made several years ago by former CEO Howard Schultz in support of gay rights that drew renewed attention amid an increasingly anti-LGBT climate in both of the predominantly Muslim countries. At a 2013 shareholders meeting, Schultz responded to a shareholder who thought the coffeemaker's support for gay marriage hurt the bottom line: "Not every decision is an economic decision," Schultz said. "The lens in which we are making that decision is through the lens of our people.” Perkasa said in a statement that the Malaysian government should revoke the trading license given to Starbucks and other companies such as Microsoft and Apple that support LGBT rights and same-sex marriage. Amini Amir Abdullah, who heads Perkasa's Islamic affairs bureau, said that Muslims should stay away from Starbucks because its pro-gay rights policy is against Islam and Malaysia's constitution. Sodomy is illegal in Malaysia and punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, but a case before the Constitutional Court is seeking to criminalize gay sex and sex outside of marriage.

Arthritis causes pain and suffering for millions of people around the world, but it's also the byproduct of an evolutionary mutation that allowed our ancestors to make the move from Africa to colder climates tens of thousands of years ago
Researchers at Stanford University have discovered that a genetic variation made humans shorter and more compact as a means of protecting them against frostbite in the colder temperatures of northern climates. In addition, their limbs got shorter, making them less vulnerable to breaking as a result of falls. The downside of this evolutionary adaptation was an increase in the likelihood of osteoarthritis. The Stanford study shows how a variation in the GDF5 gene became more prevalent in humans moving out of Africa into colder climates 50,000 to 100,000 years ago. This variation doubles the chances of developing painful joint problems while also reducing height by about 0.4 inches on average. And since arthritis generally doesn't develop until after the age of reproduction, the gene mutation was passed on from generation to generation. The Stanford researchers discovered that the genetic variation causing this increase in arthritis is common among Europeans but very rare in African populations.

White and black children in the United States did not benefit equally from a recent reduction in infant mortality, according to new research
From 2005 to 2015, the mortality rate among white infants declined from 5.7 deaths per 1,000 births to 4.8 per 1,000 births. Among black infants, the death rate declined from 14.3 per 1,000 births in 2005 to 11.6 per 1,000 in 2012, where it plateaued before going back up to 11.7 per 1,000 births in 2015. For every thousand births, there were 8.6 more infant deaths among blacks than among whites in 2005. The difference fell to 6.6 extra deaths in black infants in 2012 but rose again to 6.9 extra deaths in 2015.

Up to three quarters of Germany’s refugees will still be unemployed in five years’ time, according to a government minister, in a stark admission of the challenges the country faces in integrating its huge migrant population
Aydan Özoğuz, commissioner for immigration, refugees and integration, said that only a quarter to a third of the newcomers would enter the labor market over the next five years, and “for many others we will need up to 10”. The admission could prove awkward for Angela Merkel as she seeks a fourth term as chancellor in Bundestag elections in September 2017. Merkel saw her poll ratings plummet in 2015 when she responded to Europe’s gathering refugee crisis by throwing open Germany’s borders. The migrant issue no longer dominates the country’s nightly news bulletins, but pollsters say that the question of how it will absorb the 1.3 million migrants who have arrived here since the start of 2015 is still one of voters’ key concerns. Initially, the influx of so many working-age, highly-motivated immigrants spurred optimism that they would mitigate Germany’s acute skills shortage and solve the demographic crisis posed by its dangerously low birth rate. Dieter Zetsche, chief executive of carmaker Daimler, said that the refugees could lay the foundation for the “next German economic miracle”. But those hopes have faded as a new realism about the migrants’ lack of qualifications and language skills sinks in. “There has been a shift in perceptions,” Özoğuz said. Many of the first Syrian refugees to arrive in Germany were doctors and engineers, but they were succeeded by “many, many more who lacked skills”.

Experts have long known that African American men are more likely to die from prostate cancer, but a new study may have found the reason why
Previous research has shown that black men are 74% more likely to get the disease than white men and are twice as likely to die from it. Now a new study suggests African-American males have a certain genetic makeup that makes prostate tumors more aggressive and resistant to drug treatments. Researchers believe this difference may contribute to the large mortality disparity between black and white men when it comes to the cancer. The study was done by researchers at the George Washington University (GW) Cancer Center in Washington DC. Experts found that genetic variation, called differential RNA splicing, could play a role in tumor aggressiveness and treatability of African-American men. The study reported that the splicing led molecules to contain different combinations of cell proteins, which eventually made tumors more aggressive. When exposed to prostate cancer treatments, due to the genetic variation of these proteins, the drug was ineffective and was also resisted by the body. Principal researcher Dr Norman Lee said: "We found that the protein isoforms expressed in African Americans with prostate cancer do not always respond to targeted therapies. Whereas these drugs were found to be effective in European Americans with prostate cancer and do end up killing off the cancer. This is a mechanism for drug resistance."

A black African doctor wielding an assault rifle stormed Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, gunning down at least six staffers before taking his own life, according to a senior law enforcement officials
Police have identified the shooter as 45-year-old Henry Bello, a former employee at the hospital with an extensive arrest record. He was a 45-year-old Nigerian family medicine doctor. Bello was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 17th floor after a two-story shooting rampage that left one doctor - a woman who has yet to be identified - dead and others fighting for their lives. Officials said that Bello tried to set himself on fire before committing suicide. A preliminary investigation reveals that Bello resigned from the hospital in 2015 in lieu of termination. Bello has past arrests for sex abuse, turnstile jumping, burglary and public urination, law enforcement sources said. Senior law enforcement officials describe Bello as a transient recently, with at least five different addresses since he left the hospital.
The recent fatal shooting of a teen at an apartment complex near downtown Athens was the culmination of a feud between two transgender groups, Athens-Clarke County police have confirmed. Rayquann Deonte Jernigan, 17, who was known to friends by the chosen name of Ava Le’Ray Barrin, was killed by a single gunshot fired by 21-year-old Jalen Breon Brown in the parking lot of Riverview Apartments on College Avenue, police said. Several transgender organizations issued statements concerning the fatal shooting, including Black Transwomen Inc. “What saddens and infuriates us as an organization that seeks to represent and empower black trans women is that Ava was just 17 years old and hadn’t even had a chance to follow her dreams yet,” the statement said. “Ava has become not only the 14th trans woman murdered in the U.S. in 2017, she unfortunately is now the youngest one killed this year. She is also the 12th African American trans person killed this year.”

Authorities say that eight people, including a New Jersey rabbi, have been charged in a conspiracy to defraud Medicaid and other public assistance programs of more than $1 million
Rabbi Zalmen Sorotzkin of Congregation Lutzk in Lakewood and his wife, along with several other couples, were taken into custody during early morning raids at four homes. Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato said that more arrests are expected as a result of the investigation. The rabbi and his wife, Tzipporah, were charged with collecting more than $338,000 in benefits that prosecutors said they weren't entitled to. They were charged in state court along with Mordechai and Jocheved Breskin, who prosecutors said collected more than $585,000 in benefits. Zalmen Sorotzkin's brother, Mordechai, and his wife, Rachel, were charged in a federal complaint along with another married couple with conspiring to fraudulently obtain Medicaid benefits, Section 8 housing benefits and food assistance benefits. Mordechai and Rachel Sorotzkin allegedly made more than $1 million in 2012 and in 2013, yet the couple used Medicaid to pay for about $22,000 in medical expenses when their sixth child was born in November 2013, the complaint alleges. According to the federal complaint, Yocheved and Shimon Nussbaum hid their income by creating companies that they controlled, but were run by relatives. The couple made approximately $265,000 in 2011 -- more than double the maximum amount that one is allowed to receive Medicaid benefits for, and more than triple the maximum for Section 8 benefits, according to the complaint.

The Hispanic, Darwin Martinez Torres, who was charged with murder in the death of Nabra Hassanen, 17, is believed to be from El Salvador, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman said. According to the police, Darwin Martinez Torres had a dispute with a member of a group of Muslim teenagers whom Hassanen was walking with on their way back from suhoor (an Islamic term referring to the meal consumed early in the morning by Muslims before fasting, sawm, before dawn during or outside the Islamic month of Ramadan) at IHOP around 4 a.m. Torres then followed the group, first in his car and then on foot, striking Hassanen with a metal baseball bat and taking her with him when he left the scene. An hour later, he was arrested. The young woman’s lifeless body was found in a nearby pond.

Norway is proposing a ban on the Muslim full face veil and other face-covering clothing because it says that it hinders communication between pupils and teachers
The ban, the first in Scandinavia, targets the niqab as well as burqas, balaclavas and masks, and would apply in nurseries, schools and universities. However headscarves, hats and caps could continue to be worn. Most parties support the bill, which is expected to pass in 2018. "These clothes prevent good communication, which is important for students to receive a good education," Minister of Education and Research Torbjorn Roe Isaksen said in a statement. Interim Minister of Immigration and Integration Per Sandberg said that being able to communicate with one another was a "fundamental value". Local authorities in Norway can already ban the full-face veil in schools but there is no national policy.

A European Parliament member and prominent intellectuals protested the omission of anti-Semitism from a draft indictment of a Muslim for the murder of his Jewish neighbor
Frédérique Ries, a lawmaker from Belgium, has criticized French authorities’ handling of the investigation into the April 4, 2017 incident, in which Sarah Halimi was tortured and thrown out of her third-story apartment to her death, allegedly by Kobili Traore, who lived in her building. “French authorities have treated her murder with icy silence,” Ries, who is Jewish, said in reference to the fact that Traore, who had no history of mental illness, was placed at a psychiatric institution and has not been charged with a hate crime despite evidence suggesting that he killed Halimi because she was Jewish. In a voice recording of the incident, Traore is heard shouting “Allahu akbar,” calling Sarah “Satan” and calmly praying after her killing, according to reports. Recently, 17 French intellectuals published a scathing criticism of the handling of the incident by authorities and the media. “Everything about this crime suggests there is an ongoing denial of reality” by authorities, the intellectuals wrote, citing also testimonies of neighbors who said that Traore had called Halimi a “dirty Jew” to her face and called her relatives “dirty Jews” as well in the past. Many Jews believe that authorities covered up Halimi’s alleged murder to prevent it from becoming fodder for the racially and religiously divisive French presidential campaign.

Primitive Africa: Police in Mozambique have warned that bald people could be the targets of ritual attacks, after the brutal killing of two men whose body parts were to be used in witchcraft
The two bald men, one of whom was found with his head cut off and organs removed, were killed in a part of the country already notorious for the persecution of albinos. "Last month, the murders of two bald people led to the arrest of two suspects," national police spokesman Inacio Dina told a news conference in the capital Maputo. "Their motivations come from superstition and culture: the local community thinks bald individuals are rich," he said. The killings took place in Milange, in the center of the southern African country, a few kilometers from the border with Malawi. The local police said that the two victims were aged over 40. "One of them was found with his head cut off and his organs removed," said Miguel Caetano, spokesman for the security forces in the central province of Zambezia. The suspects arrested are two Mozambicans around 20 years old. According to their statements, the organs were to be used by healers in rituals to promote the fortunes of clients in Tanzania and Malawi, he said. In Maputo, the national police spokesman likened the attacks to those on albinos, whose body parts are used in witchcraft rituals. According to the UN, more than a hundred attacks against albinos - who have white skin because of a hereditary condition that causes an absence of pigmentation - have been registered in Mozambique since 2014, mainly in the center and the north of the country.

The HIV rate in gay and bisexual black men in America is higher than that of any country in the world
Swaziland has the highest HIV rate in the world at 28.8%. The HIV rate in the United States is 9.1%. But according to the CDC, if current trends hold, the HIV rate for gay and bisexual black men in America will reach 50%. The problem is worst in the South. Already in Jackson, Mississippi, the HIV rate among gay and bisexual men is 40%.

A graduation celebration for a group of kindergartners in Pennsylvania turned into a deadly shooting — all because of a dispute between two young boys. Devon Brown, 29, was fatally shot in the head by 27-year-old Tremaine Jamison at the Marion Terrace Apartment Complex in Hanover Township. The two men were at a party Brown had thrown for his 6-year-old son and a few other kids. Witnesses said that the drama started after two boys, both 6, got into a fight. Brown's little boy was accused of punching Jamison's son, leaving with him a black eye. The two fathers and several other adults started arguing — and that's when things escalated. One adult pulled out a pocketknife and Brown went inside his house to grab a blade of his own. Jamison grabbed a handgun and fired a single shot at Brown's head. Brown was pronounced dead and Jamison, from Harlem, fled.

The first ever full-genome analysis of Ancient Egyptians shows that they were more Turkish and European than African
Scientists analyzed ancient DNA from Egyptian mummies dating from 1400 BC to 400 AD and discovered that they shared genes with people from the Mediterranean. They found that ancient Egyptians were closely related to ancient populations in the Levant - now modern day Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon. They were also genetically similar to Neolithic populations from the Anatolian Peninsula and Europe. The study found that modern Egyptians share more ancestry with Sub-Saharan Africans than ancient Egyptians did. The data shows that modern Egyptians share approximately 8% more ancestry on the nuclear level with Sub-Saharan African populations than with ancient Egyptians. In the last 1,500 years, Egypt became more genetically African, whereas the ancient Egyptians showed almost no sub-Saharan African ancestry and had a high affinity to ancient Near Eastern and European populations.

A Jewish teenager from Britain says that he feared for his life at a top Berlin school because of violent bullying by Muslim classmates
“I was terrified and just went to the ground” when the bullies pulled a fake gun and threatened to kill him, the 14-year-old boy said. “Everyone burst into laughter and called me gay,” the Jewish teen — who is the grandson of Holocaust survivors — said of his classmates at the Friedenau Gemeinschaftsschule. The Jewish teen said that he suffered daily taunts and frequent painful kicking and punching attacks by students of Middle Eastern and Turkish origin. The bullying continued even after Ferdinand’s grandparents gave a speech at the school describing how they survived the Holocaust. The boy has since been moved to a new school and prosecutors are investigating.

The majority of Britons believe that ethnic minorities living in Britain are a threat to their culture
Up to a quarter of the population thinks that immigrants are stealing jobs, while just over a third (34%) believe that they take more from the nation than they contribute, according to the latest Aurora Humanitarian Index survey. The study also found that respondents believe Brexit will have an impact on Britain’s ability to deal with the flood of refugees flowing into Europe from war-torn areas. A large number of people lack confidence in world leaders to tackle the refugee crisis, the survey found, and when it comes to Prime Minister Theresa May only a minority (15%) think that she is the best figure to resolve the issue. Announcing their general election manifesto in Halifax recently, the Tories renewed their pledge to cut net migration to the tens of thousands, a commitment first made by former Prime Minister David Cameron back in 2010. Net migration levels in 2016, however, stood at 248,000, leading many opposition figures to question the viability of the Tory pledge. The 2017 Aurora Humanitarian Index surveyed 6,500 people from 12 countries. In Britain specifically, it found that 56% of UK nationals believe that “Britishness” is at stake because of ethnic minorities. Although the survey was taken prior to the recent suicide bomb attack in Manchester which took the lives of 22 people and injured up to 64, it found that two-thirds of respondents believe terrorism is currently one of the biggest global challenges.

Two men in Indonesia's Aceh province have been publicly caned dozens of times for consensual gay sex, a punishment that rights advocates denounced as "medieval torture" and that has escalated an anti-gay backlash
Hundreds packed the courtyard of a mosque to witness the caning of the men for homosexuality. The caning took place in Aceh, a province in Indonesia that practices Shariah law. The men, aged 20 and 23, were arrested in March 2017 after vigilantes broke into their rented room to catch them having sex. A Shariah court sentenced each man to 85 lashes. Indonesia's LGBT community has been under siege in the past year. Prejudice has been fanned by stridently anti-gay comments from politicians and Islamic hard-liners.

Report: Black men with a bachelor’s degree are more than twice as likely as black women to intermarry
Black men and Asian women are more likely to marry someone of a different race. Asians are most likely to intermarry, with 29% of newlywed Asians married to someone of a different race or ethnicity, followed by Hispanics at 27%, blacks at 18% and whites at 11%. While about one-fourth of recently married black men (24%) have a spouse of a different race or ethnicity, this share is 12% among recently married black women. And the difference between black men and women regarding intermarriage also increases with education. For those with a high school diploma or less, 17% of men vs. 10% of women are intermarried, while among those with a bachelor’s degree, black men are more than twice as likely as black women to intermarry (30% vs. 13%). A large percentage of black women with college degrees remain unmarried because they seek to only wed a black, college-educated man. Married Black women who are college graduates are much more likely to have a husband with a lower level of education (58%), compared to whites of a similar background (48%). Asian women are far more likely to intermarry than Asian men. In 2015, just over one-third (36%) of newlywed Asian women had a spouse of a different race or ethnicity, while 21% of newlywed Asian men had a spouse of a different race. About half (49%) of Democrats and Independents who lean toward the Democratic Party say that the growing number of people of different races marrying each other is a good thing for society. Only 28% of Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents share that view. The most common intermarriages were between a Hispanic and white spouse, at 42%. The next most common was between a white and Asian spouse at 15%, followed by a multiracial and white spouse at 12%.
Authorities in Bangladesh have arrested 27 men in a crackdown on homosexuality, a criminal offense in the Muslim-majority country, and plan to charge them with drug possession
A commander of the elite police unit that made the arrests says the suspects, mostly students aged 20-30 years, had traveled from across the country and were picked up in a raid on a community center at Keraniganj, outside the nation's capital. Zahangir Hossain Matobbar says that they recovered illegal drugs and condoms in their possession and plan to charge them with drug offenses and not homosexuality because they were detained before they engaged in sex. "We've arrested 27 people for homosexuality," one major is quoted as saying. The agency also arrested the owner of the community center where the suspects used to gather every two months and stay overnight for partying. Homosexuality is a crime in Bangladesh. In 2016, suspected militants killed a leading LGBT activist and his friend in Dhaka. The 35-year-old Xulhaz Mannan, a USAID official, was hacked to death at his home. He had founded the country's only LGBT magazine and was a leading organizer of gays. Since then, many gays and lesbians have left the country after they received death threats.

A black man is accused of luring an 8-year-old girl into his home and sexually battering her, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office
Sydney Allan Markland, 68, told deputies that the child was "wearing provocative clothing" during the July 2016 assault. The victim told authorities that she knew Markland in passing because they live in the same neighborhood, so when he appeared injured and asked her if she would help him carry some fried chicken into the house, she agreed, deputies said. Markland, who goes by the nickname "Dread," sexually battered the victim and told her not to tell anyone. The girl told a parent, who called law enforcement. DNA samples were collected from the victim's and after several months, they proved to be a match with Markland. Detectives wrote in their report that the girl told them Markland "told her not to tell anyone, kissed her on the cheek and read from the Bible" after the assault. Deputies said Markland told them that in his culture his actions are considered acceptable. He also said that the child's clothing and "actions" suggested consent, officials said. "She was wearing provocative clothing," Markland said during his confession, according to what detectives wrote in their report. "Her actions suggested that she was consenting to sexual contact." After his arrest Friday, Markland admitted to detectives that he sexually battered the girl after eating chicken wings and praying with her, detectives said.

Jakarta's Christian governor has been jailed for two years after being found guilty of committing blasphemy, capping a saga seen as a test of religious tolerance in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation
Presiding judge Dwiarso Budi Santiarto told the Jakarta court that Basuki Tjahaja Purnama was "convincingly guilty of committing blasphemy and is sentenced to two years in prison". He ordered Purnama, known by his nickname Ahok, to be detained. Purnama said: "We will file an appeal." Islamic hardliners outside the court cheered as news of verdict emerged and shouted "God is greatest". Purnama was hauled into court to face trial for allegedly insulting Islam while campaigning for re-election in a case that critics said was politically motivated. The trial came after a series of major protests against the capital's leader that drew hundreds of thousands onto the streets. His once unassailable opinion poll lead shrank amid the controversy and he lost the race to lead Jakarta to a Muslim challenger, a result that fueled fears of Indonesia's moderate brand of Islam coming under threat from increasingly influential radicals.
A video of an imam appearing to call for the murder of Jews in a sermon during Friday prayers at a Copenhagen mosque has caused outrage in Denmark
Mundhir Abdallah was reported to police after being filmed citing in Arabic a hadith - a teaching of the Prophet Muhammad - considered anti-Semitic. The hadith says that the Day of Judgment "will not come unless the Muslims fight the Jews and the Muslims kill them". A Jewish community leader said that his words were a "thinly-veiled" threat. Videos of the sermon were posted on YouTube and Facebook by the Al-Faruq Mosque. A part of the 30-minute address was later translated by the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute (Memri). In the video, Abdallah is seen standing in front of a black flag with the Shahadah written on it, similar to those used by jihadist groups such as al-Qaeda. He declares there will soon be a "caliphate" - a state governed in accordance with Islamic law, or Sharia - that will wage jihad to unite the Muslim community and liberate the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem "from the filth of the Zionists". Then, he says, "the words of the Prophet Muhammad will be fulfilled" and cites the hadith. Jewish community leader Dan Rosenberg said: "We are concerned weak and impressionable people may perceive this kind of preaching as a clear call to violence and terror against Jews." Immigration and Integration Minister Inger Stojberg also expressed outrage. "This is completely preposterous, undemocratic and awful," the center-right Venstre politician wrote on Facebook. "But it also shows why we need to lead a harsh and consistent policy. We cannot and should not accept this!"

The more dramatically Eastern European Jews progress socio-economically, the more strenuously they identify with “marginalized groups” and seek to undermine the white Christian majority population
Paul Gottfried reviews David R. Verbeeten’s The Politics of Non-Assimilation: Three Generations of Eastern European Jews in the United States in the Twentieth Century. According to Gottfried, Verbeeten's book is a goldmine of sociological evidence about the Eastern European Jews who migrated to America at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Ukip candidate standing against Andy Burnham in mayoral election is a bible-burning Orthodox Jewish rabbi
An Orthodox Jewish rabbi who is standing for Ukip in a mayoral election burned a bible and posted the pictures on social media. Shneur Odze, who is standing against former Health Secretary Andy Burnham in Manchester, reacted with fury when he found a religious tract in his synagogue which purported to be a Jewish bible. Odze took the book – which he believes was placed there by a proselytizing religious sect – out into the street and set fire to it. He then put pictures of the event on Twitter under the comment: "Grateful to whoever put a missionary bible amongst our synagogue’s books. Was wondering what I’d burn my Chametz [food forbidden at Passover] with." Odze explained that his actions were in line with Orthodox tradition because it was a Hebrew new testament purporting to be a Jewish bible, produced by "an extreme proselytizing Christian sect of former Jews trying to convert practicing Jews to a belief in Christ as the prophesied Messiah."

Two studies by researchers at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto and their collaborators from the United States, Britain, France and China, show that six- to nine-month-old infants demonstrate racial bias in favor of members of their own race and racial bias against those of other races
In the first study, “Older but not younger infants associate own-race faces with happy music and other-race faces with sad music”, results showed that after six months of age, infants begin to associate own-race faces with happy music and other-race faces with sad music. In the second study, “Infants rely more on gaze cues from own-race than other-race adults for learning under uncertainty”, researchers found that six- to eight-month-old infants were more inclined to learn information from an adult of his or her own race than from an adult of a different race. “The findings of these studies are significant for many reasons,” said Dr. Kang Lee, professor at OISE’s Jackman Institute of Child Study, a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair and lead author of the studies. “The results show that race-based bias already exists around the second half of a child’s first year. This challenges the popular view that race-based bias first emerges only during the preschool years.” Researchers say that these findings are also important because they offer a new perspective on the cause of race-based bias. “When we consider why someone has a racial bias, we often think of negative experiences he or she may have had with other-race individuals. But, these findings suggest that a race-based bias emerges without experience with other-race individuals,” said Dr. Naiqi (Gabriel) Xiao, first author of the two papers and postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University.

Islamic terrorism: A bomb exploded in a church north of Cairo that was packed with Palm Sunday worshippers, killing at least 25 people and wounding 71 others
The attack in the Nile Delta town of Tanta was the latest in a series of assaults on Egypt's Christian minority, which makes up around 10% of the population and has been repeatedly targeted by Islamic extremists. It comes just weeks before Pope Francis is due to visit Egypt. A local Islamic State affiliate claimed a suicide bombing at a church in Cairo in December 2016 that killed around 30 people, mostly women, as well as a string of killings in the restive Sinai Peninsula that caused hundreds of Christians to flee to safer areas of the country.

Donald Trump’s son-in-law was accepted into the Ivy League university in the wake of a $2.5m pledge made by his parents. New Jersey real estate developer Charles Kushner had pledged $2.5m to Harvard University not long before his son Jared was admitted to the prestigious Ivy League school. Administrators at Jared’s high school described him as a less-than-stellar student and expressed dismay at Harvard’s decision. “There was no way anybody in the administrative office of the school thought he would on the merits get into Harvard,’’ a former official at the Frisch school in Paramus, New Jersey, said. “His GPA [grade point average] did not warrant it, his SAT scores did not warrant it. We thought, for sure, there was no way this was going to happen. Then, lo and behold, Jared was accepted. It was a little bit disappointing because there were at the time other kids we thought should really get in on the merits, and they did not." Charles Kushner has a criminal record. Five years after Jared entered Harvard, the elder Kushner pleaded guilty in 2004 to tax violations, illegal campaign donations and retaliating against a witness. Charles Kushner had hired a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, who was cooperating with federal authorities. Kushner then had a videotape of the tryst sent to his sister. He was sentenced to two years in federal prison.

Envoys from African nations in the Indian capital, Delhi, have condemned the handling of recent attacks on Nigerian students in the city
In a statement, the African Heads of Mission said that the attacks were "xenophobic and racial". Indian authorities had failed to "sufficiently condemn" the attacks or take "visible deterring measures", the envoys added. The students were attacked recently in Greater Noida, close to Delhi. Five Nigerian students were attacked by crowds, while another was beaten by a mob inside a shopping mall. The violence was prompted by the death of a local teenager due to a drug overdose. His parents blame Nigerian students for giving him the drugs. In May 2016 a Congolese man was beaten to death in Delhi after an argument over an auto-rickshaw. Three months before that, a Tanzanian student was assaulted and partially stripped by a mob in the southern city of Bangalore. A Nigerian man living in Goa was stabbed to death in 2013. Meanwhile, police say that a Kenyan woman accused of faking a race attack in Greater Noida will be deported. The woman said that she had been dragged out of a taxi by five men two days after the mob violence, but police said their investigation and the taxi's GPS tracker proved her story wrong. Her visa had expired, they added.
Researchers from King's College London have used a genetic scoring technique to predict reading performance throughout school years from DNA alone
The study shows that a genetic score comprising around 20,000 of DNA variants explains 5% of the differences between children's reading performance. Students with the highest and lowest genetic scores differed by a whole two years in their reading performance. These findings highlight the potential of using genetic scores to predict strengths and weaknesses in children's learning abilities. According to the study authors, these scores could one day be used to identify and tackle reading difficulties early, rather than waiting until children develop these problems at school.

The Israeli prosecution seems oddly reluctant to move against Rabbi Yosef Elitzur of Yitzhar, one of the authors “The King’s Torah,” a controversial tome offering halakhic conditions under which it is permissible to kill non-Jews
Elitzur has failed to respond to letters summoning him to a hearing ahead of possible legal proceedings against him. The first such letter was sent in December 2016, after Attorney-General Avichai Mendelblit announced intentions to indict, subject to a hearing for Elitzur. Under the law, the prosecution must wait at least a month between sending a summons to a hearing and putting the defendant on trial without hearing his side first. That 30-day hiatus ended in January 2017, yet no indictments have been served. A three-month delay in filing charges after sending a letter on a hearing is highly unusual and unreasonable, especially after the delays in the case already. Elitzur is one of the leaders of the Od Yosef Chai yeshiva. Back in 2009, in an op-ed that may be used in his prosecution, he called for violence against Arabs, writing: “If the Arabs win because of violence against Jews, the Jews can also win through violence against Arabs. The strength of women, children and the old can be utilized to block a given road and during that time, a harsher action can be taken against hostile elements down that same road.” In another article, Elitzur praised perpetrators of anti-Arab hate crimes known as “price tag” attacks, and said that “while no one wants to live in a state of anarchy, there are times when we must live by the rules of the jungle and show evil gentiles that Jews can also play that game.”
Marvel’s vice president of sales has blamed declining comic-book sales on the studio’s efforts to increase diversity and female characters, saying that readers “were turning their noses up” at diversity and “didn’t want female characters out there”. Over recent years, Marvel has made efforts to include more diverse and more female characters, introducing new iterations of fan favorites including a female Thor; Riri Williams, a black teenager who took over the Iron Man storyline as Ironheart; Miles Morales, a biracial Spider-Man and Kamala Khan, a Muslim teenage girl who is the current Ms Marvel. But speaking at the Marvel retailer summit about the studio’s falling comic sales, David Gabriel said retailers had told him that fans were sticking to old favorites. “What we heard was that people didn’t want any more diversity,” he said. “They didn’t want female characters out there. That’s what we heard, whether we believe that or not.” He added: “I don’t know that that’s really true, but that’s what we saw in sales … Any character that was diverse, any character that was new, our female characters, anything that was not a core Marvel character, people were turning their nose up.”

A Mexican newspaper in the border city of Juarez says that it is closing due to the climate of insecurity and impunity for killings of journalists in one of the world's deadliest countries for media workers
Norte executive Oscar Cantu Murguia informs readers of his decision in a farewell letter titled "Adios!" Cantu cites the recent murder of journalist Miroslava Breach in the city of Chihuahua, which like Juarez is in Chihuahua state. Breach was a reporter for La Jornada and had also collaborated with Norte. She was the third Mexican journalist killed in March 2017, notes the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas. Cantu writes that he is not prepared for any more of his journalists to pay the price of insecurity. At least 38 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 1992 for motives related to their work, according the Committee to Protect Journalists.

A new study of hundreds of human genomes has revealed that groups in various regions of the world have evolved for diets with different amounts of meat and vegetables
People from Europe, particularly its southern regions, are optimized for a high-plant diet. But people from other areas, such as the Inuit of Greenland, have a biochemistry that is better able to process lots of meat fat. UC Berkeley integrative biology professor Rasmus Nielsen and his colleagues had access not only to hundreds of genome sequences from humans today, but also to sequences from 101 people who lived in Europe 5,000 years ago during the Bronze Age. By comparing these genomes, they found that two particular regions of DNA were under intense selection over the past several thousand years and changed rapidly in response to evolutionary pressures. These DNA regions contain two genes called "fatty acid desaturase 1 and 2," or FADS1 and 2 for short. The FADS genes regulate how the human body converts short-chain poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) into long-chain PUFAs for the health of many tissues, including muscles and the brain. In Europeans dating back to the Bronze Age, the FADS genes have undergone mutations to produce more long-chain PUFAs. This suggests a diet higher in vegetables and grains, which produce short-chain PUFAs. Meat produces long-chain PUFAs. The Inuit group's FADS genes are primed to produce fewer long-chain PUFAs, likely because the Inuit diet is so high in animal fats from ocean mammals. Nielsen and his colleagues believe that the European variant of the FADS genes likely are the result of agricultural lifestyles, leading to diets rich in wheat and vegetables. When people in Europe and the Middle East began to practice farming over 10,000 years ago, suddenly they were ingesting far more of those short-chain PUFAs. People who could convert short-chain PUFAs into long-chain PUFAs efficiently were more likely to survive, and so their FADS genes were passed on. It's also likely that the FADS genes have been changing rapidly for tens of thousands of years, as humans found new environmental niches across the planet. This puts them in stark contrast with genes that allow for lactose tolerance, which are clearly linked to a rise in dairy production on farms in the West. "The selection associated with lactase persistence (avoidance of lactose intolerance) seems to have been stronger in Northern Europe," Nielsen explained. "However, we don't see the same geographic patterns for the FADS genes. If anything, selection that would be driven by a more vegetarian diet might have been stronger in Southern Europe. Selection associated with the FADS genes might also be older than the selection affecting lactase." So there is little overlap between people with veggie-friendly FADS genes and people with genes for lactase persistence.

Poll: Nearly half of Canadians want to deport people who are illegally crossing into Canada from the United States, and a similar number disapprove of how Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is handling the influx
A significant minority, four out of 10 respondents, said that the border crossers could make Canada "less safe," underlining the potential political risk for Trudeau's Liberal government. The increasing flow of hundreds of asylum-seekers of African and Middle Eastern origin from the United States in recent months has become a contentious issue in Canada. There has been broad bipartisan support for high levels of legal immigration for decades in Canada. But Trudeau has come under pressure over the flow of the illegal migrants. He is questioned about it every time he appears in parliament, from opponents on the left, who want more asylum-seekers to be allowed in, and critics on the right, who say that the migrants pose a potential security risk. Canadians appeared to be just as concerned about illegal immigration as their American neighbors. Some 48% of Canadians said that they supported “increasing the deportation of people living in Canada illegally.” When asked specifically about the recent border crossings from the United States, the same number - 48% - said that Canada should "send these migrants back to the U.S." In the United States, where President Donald Trump was elected partly on his promise to boost deportations, 50% of adults supported “increasing the deportation of illegal immigrants.”
Norway is the happiest place on Earth, according to a United Nations agency report - toppling neighbor Denmark from the number one position
The World Happiness Report measures subjective well-being - how happy the people are, and why. Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland and Finland round out the top five, while the Central African Republic came last. Western Europe and North America dominated the top of the table, with the United States and Britain at 14th and 19th, respectively. Countries in sub-Saharan Africa and those hit by conflict have predictably low scores. Syria placed 152 of 155 countries - Yemen and South Sudan, which are facing impending famine, came in at 146 and 147.

Election 2016: Married women were considerably more likely - by a margin of 9 points - to vote for Trump than were unmarried men
They were even marginally more likely to vote for him than were married men! While only 3% of unmarried black women voted for Trump, more than 1-in-4 married black men did. Married Hispanics were marginally more likely to vote for Trump than unmarried whites were. Marrieds were more likely to support Trump than singles in every category examined. Among those of family formation age, Trump wins by 6 points among those with children while losing among those without kids by 12 points.
