Crime and the black family in South Africa: Anti-apartheid icon Desmond Tutu and his wife, Leah, have pressed criminal charges against their granddaughter

Ziyanda Palesa Tutu, Mr Tutu's eldest grandchild, has been accused of property damage, according to South African police. Speaking to a local news station, Miss Tutu laid the blame at the feet of her grandmother, saying that they had never had a good relationship. The 30-year-old also took to Twitter to comment on the family dispute, adding that she would be handling herself in to police in Cape Town. In a statement released by the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, the couple confirmed that they had brought charges and said that they had been left deeply saddened by the incident. Mr Tutu, the former Archbishop of Cape Town, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his role as a unifying leader in the campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid in South Africa. In an interview4, Miss Tutu would not confirm what she was being charged with, but said that she believed her grandparents could have handled the matter privately. She pointed out that they were the ones with the money and the power.
